To Electra

Notes

Robert Herrick (1592-1674) is one of the Cavalier poets in the 17th century English. The Cavalier poets wrote light poetry, polished and elegant, amorous and gay, but often superficial. Most of their verses were short songs, pretty madrigals, love fancies characterized by lightness of heart and of morals.

To Electra

I dare not ask a kiss,

I dare not beg a smile,

Lest having that, or this,

I might grow proud the while.

No, no, the utmost share

Of my desire shall be

Only to kiss that air

That lately kissed thee.

我不敢奢求一笑;

Fake Money

Fake Money

Jimmy went into a shop, took a toy tank, gave the

shopkeeper fake money and started to leave.

So, the shopkeeper told him, “Excuse me, little boy,

this isn’t real money.” Little Jimmy didn’t reply,

continuing walking out of the shop. The shopkeeper

repeated himself, and Jimmy kept walking.

The third time the shopkeeper called him, “I’m sorry,

young man, but this is not real money.”

Jimmy looked at the tank in his hands, looked at the

shopkeeper and finally said, “And this isn’t a real tank, either.”

Time

Time

[Published by Mrs. Shelley, "Posthumous Poems", 1824.]

Unfathomable Sea! whose waves are years,
Ocean of Time, whose waters of deep woe
Are brackish with the salt of human tears!
Thou shoreless flood, which in thy ebb and flow
Claspest the limits of mortality,
And sick of prey, yet howling on for more,
Vomitest thy wrecks on its inhospitable shore;
Treacherous in calm, and terrible in storm,
Who shall put forth on thee,
Unfathomable Sea?

时间

幽深的海呵!年代是你的浪波;
把破碎的船吐在无情的岸沿;
